Prof. dr. ir. A.A.A. Molenaar

Welcome to my website

Introduction

Let me start with a short introduction. My name is Andre A.A. Molenaar (1947) and I obtained my MSc degree in Civil Engineering at the Delft University in 1972. After completing my studies I joined the Highway Engineering group of that University as an assistant professor. I joined the Road and Railway Research Laboratory of the Delft University in 1977 where I was in charge of developing a pavement management system, pavement evaluation procedures and a research program on the characterization of the fatigue and crack growth resistance of asphalt mixtures. In 1979 I was appointed as associate professor. In 1983 I obtained my doctor's degree on a thesis entitled "Structural Performance and Design of Flexible Pavements and Asphalt Concrete Overlays". My supervisors were prof Hylco Span of the Delft University and prof. Bob Lytton of the Texas A&M University.

In 1985 I left the university to become managing director of Netherlands Pavement Consultants. Under my leadership the company developed a pavement management system "ViaView" and was heavily involved in a nationwide project on the characterization of recycled asphalt mixtures and the evaluation of the development of top down cracking as well as reflective cracking in asphalt pavements. Another specialty of the company was the design and evaluation of road and airfield pavements. Pavement evaluation jobs were e.g. performed at Amsterdam's  airport Schiphol, Heathrow and Gatwick in London, and the airports of Brussels, Vienna, Hong Kong, Lubumbashi, and many NATO airports in the Netherlands and Germany.

In 1988 I returned to the Delft University as a part time professor in Highway Engineering which in 1990 was changed into a full time professorship.

Next to my teaching tasks I was in charge of large research programs on accelerated testing of asphalt pavements, pavement evaluation, recycling of construction demolition waste, and the characterization of the stiffness, fatigue, crack growth, and permanent deformation behavior of asphalt mixtures made of virgin and recycled materials.

My managerial tasks at the Delft University involved the leadership for many years of the Road and Railway Engineering section, member of the Board of Promotions of the Delft University, vice-dean of the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geo Sciences, director of studies of Civil Engineering, and chairman of the Science Committee of Civil.

From 1989 to 2002 I was also teaching Road Engineering in the Transportation and Road Engineering for Developing Countries (TREND) Course that was given at the IHE - UNESCO Water Institute in Delft.

In 2003 I was appointed as professor "extraordinarius" at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa and in 2005 I was appointed as visiting professor at the Wuhan University of Technology in China.

Internationally I have been teaching short courses on a regular basis at the University of Oulu in Finland, the University of Stellenbosch and the Wuhan University of Technology.

In order not to loose contact with practice, I was involved in many consultancy projects in the Netherlands and overseas (e.g. Gambia, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Surinam, Mexico).

Because of all the nice work done by my students, we were able to publish a large number of papers both in refereed journals as well as at prestigious international conferences. Furthermore I had the privilege to be invited and act as a keynote speaker, session chairman, and moderator at many international conferences all over the world.

I also have been a member and chairman of many research committees of the CROW organization in the Netherlands and have been a member of international organizations like ISAP, AAPT, TRB and RILEM.

Reasons for this website

During my career I supervised the work of many MSc (177 from 27 different countries) and PhD (34 from 11 different countries) students. Next to that I was involved in a large number of research projects and also did consultancy work in many places all over the world. Although I am retired, much of the work that was done under mu supervision and by me is still of interest. Therefore I have decided to make this website to allow all interested persons to have a look into the things I did together with my students and to allow them to make use of those items which they consider to be of interest.

This website contains:

- lecture notes

- short notes on several topics

- presentations made for short intensive courses presented in South Africa, China and Chile

- papers prepared for and presentations made at several conferences

- theses of MSc and PhD students who did their work under my supervision.

PhD Theses

Here you can find the PhD theses that were prepared under my supervision. The name of the student is given first of all followed by the title of the thesis and the date at which she/he received her degree. Also the summary is given together with a pdf which contains the complete thesis.
